Agape Corner

www.agapecorner.org

About this ministry: Agape Corner Boarding School is in its 25th year of operation in Durham, NC. Our priority children come from among the poor, the fatherless, the afflicted, and the needy. Many are victims of multiple, devastating factors in their environments, and they may demonstrate behavioral problems at home, in school, or in their neighborhoods. Agape’ Corner Boarding School provides children with a solid and free K-12 education within a Christian, family-like environment.

Volunteer opportunities: Volunteers can help with tutoring and building relationships through sports and other various activities; including hosting kickball days at a local park, bringing a meal as a group to the Agape house, or any other activity aimed at creating relationships with the children at Agape Corner.

Hope Reins of Raleigh

http://hopereinsraleigh.org/

About this ministry: Hope Reins of Raleigh is a non-profit ministry that connects hurting children with rescued horses to find comfort, hope and healing. We serve children ages 5 to 18 that are struggling with hardship issues such as trauma, abuse, family addictions, loss or grief, illness, or who live in an otherwise at-risk environment by providing a free of charge, 90-minute session with a trained leader and horse that fits their specific situation or need.

Volunteer Opportunities: Listeners for parents/guardians of children in session, play pals for siblings of those in session, session leaders who work one-on-one with children and horses (horse training required), feeders, maintenance, and barn chores.  Every Saturday morning 9am-noon, barn chores and tours are open to the public.

Oxford Manor

About this ministry: Summit members have been involved with kids at Oxford Manor housing complex off Roxboro Road for the past 6 years. God has allowed them to love and be loved by amazing kids and to see kids pray to receive Christ! Check out the multiple things going on at Oxford Manor and how you can get involved:

  • Saturday Kid’s Club: meets every Saturday from 12:15-2pm. We play with the kids, sing songs, teach a lesson from the Bible, pray and eat snack.  This is a great opportunity for singles, couples or families to get involved!
  • "Girl's Night Out": Hang out with girls from Oxford Manor, ages 10-14, every other Wednesday night from 6:15-8:30pm for bible study, mentorship, and a fun activity.  We are looking for more ladies to commit to investing in these amazing young women.
  • "StraightUP": Come make a difference in the lives of young men at Oxford Manor through basketball, hip hop, and studying God's Word together. We meet every Wednesday from 6-8:30pm.

Mentoring

Our mentoring and tutoring initiatives with local schools create an intersection for us with kids who are desperate for hope.  Most of these kids are facing difficult situations at home and at school that can lead to dropping out of school, going to prison, or becoming homeless.  We see our opportunity to mentor and tutor kids as a way to build relationships, demonstrating and communicating the hope we have in Christ.

  • Mentoring: We are looking for volunteers who can commit to meet with a student at Chewning Middle or Cary High School for 1 hour a week between 7:30am-3pm.  Let us know your schedule and interests and we will match you with a student who will be the best fit.
  • Men of Honor: We are also looking for male volunteers for an after-school program at Chewning Middle School called Men of Honor from 2:30-5pm.  Many of the boys in this program have no older male role model in their life, join us and be the first.
  • Interested in mentoring at another school?  Contact KJ for more information.
